Check travel advice before planning
Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes Level 4 advice for areas near the Ukrainian border and Level 3 advice for other areas of Russia. Read the current official advice, including its regional details and exceptions. Having a visa does not establish that a journey is safe.
Eligibility and permitted stay
Japan appears on the official list of eligible countries. The unified e-visa permits one entry, is valid for 120 days from issue and allows a stay of up to 30 days. You must also leave within the visa's validity. Count both arrival and departure days. Read the official entry guidance.
Prepare your application
The official application window is 86 to 4 days before intended entry. Prepare a machine-readable passport valid for at least six months from application, an image of the passport data page and a portrait. The official portal requires JPEG images. Medical insurance valid for the whole stay is normally required; check the official conditions for any reciprocal exemption.
After submission and before departure
Check notifications and application status. If corrections are requested, correct and resubmit the application; processing starts again after resubmission. Check the name, passport number and dates on the issued visa. Print the grant notification or save it for offline access. Read the official application conditions.
Use approved checkpoints for both entry and exit. Also confirm that your route is operating, check transit conditions and ask your carrier which documents it requires.
